Only the British, perhaps even only the English, would served cooked head lettuce as a vegetable.

I've seen it in Chinese food.

I thought that the British specialty was boiled toast.

I've seen various odd cabbages in Chinese food, and I've seen Chinese served on a bed of lettuce that inadvertently go cooked after serving. Hm... maybe there have been shreds of lettuce in something, too. I just don't remember that one. And that is nothing like a huge pile of plain cooked head lettuce -- like they took a U.S. salad and steamed it.
