Only the British, perhaps even only the English, would served cooked head lettuce as a vegetable.

*sigh* It doesn't sound like something any other nationality would want to eat. I hope you are getting some reasonable food!

I don't know yet -- it was my first meal here. But I think I did spot an Indian restaurant that I might be able to find again, and that should be good food.

In a recent discussion, we tried to think of sources of vitamin C in the British diet. I guess that's where it is. :) Hopefully not too overcooked.

I think just about any cooking on white lettuce is too much -- and I didn't think it had all that many vitamins to start with.

I've seen it in Chinese food.

I thought that the British specialty was boiled toast.

I've seen various odd cabbages in Chinese food, and I've seen Chinese served on a bed of lettuce that inadvertently go cooked after serving. Hm... maybe there have been shreds of lettuce in something, too. I just don't remember that one. And that is nothing like a huge pile of plain cooked head lettuce -- like they took a U.S. salad and steamed it.
