Ouch!

I took a hard fall skiing today. (For those coming in late, I'm currently spending a week at Crystal Mountain, Washington with redrunn for the skiing. This is in the middle of a business trip, Dallas last week, and Seattle-area next week for me.)

I was moving fast because of an upcoming compression and rise, caught an edge, and went down on hard-packed snow. I hit hard enough to severely wind myself -- couldn't get any breath for 3 or 4 tries, then slowly a bit of air. Didn't try to get up for at least a couple minutes -- slopes are practically empty, so I wasn't worried about any hitting me. After very carefully and slowly getting up, I recovered my skis, ouch from leaning over, walked up the rise, and skied very carefully and slowly to the bottom of the run. A lift ride up, gondola down, and slow careful walk back to the apartment wiped me out.

The whole right side of my torso, from hips to shoulders, hurts. And any movement makes it worse, especially anything with a twist or bend. You don't realize how much you use little twists, bends, and movements in your torso all the time until everything hurts when you do those movements. I also banged my head, but that is fine -- I'm very glad I bought and started wearing a helmet for downhill skiing.

I think it is most likely just bruises and strains, rather than anything broken. If anything is broken, it is ribs, and they don't do anything much for broken/cracked ribs but let them heal, anyway. If it is still really bad when I get back to Ottawa, I'll go for X-rays.

Yikes! I hope it just winds up being some bruising and nothing broken. :( Take care!

Me too. I don't feel any worse this morning than yesterday, which I think is a good sign.

I'm glad that things are still improving - when you first came in after bouncing it was clear that you'd taken a very hard bounce.

...and...

Yes! for Helmets. We both were using them for the first time, and we both managed to prove they were worth the cost.

Really. If you're reading this and you ski - get a helmet. The only thing I noticed about wearing a helmet is that it was warmer then wearing a hat - until my head bounced on the ground and I was very glad to be wearing the helmet.

So, where to next year? :)

Definitely helmets are a good thing!

And, I think I'm still improving -- though hard to tell day-to-day. Definitely better today than the first day or two, though. Harder to tell if better than yesterday.

Next year... somewhere with snow? :)
