Avalanches are dangerous.

My brother-in-law (Randy) should recover.

About a week and half ago he was caught in an avalanche while back-country skiing. Got rescued by helicopter about 4 hours later (which is not unreasonable for back-country rescue operations) -- hauled out in a basket suspended below the chopper.

He has two breaks in one femur (thigh bone), a cracked pelvis, 8 cracked ribs, a pierced lung, and two cracked vertebrae (one in his neck) and minor head injuries.

I don't know much in details about the accident, avalanche or other stuff. I may not until I see him next. Of course, that will depend on whether or not he wants to tell the story again.

Were his skiing companions unhurt? Anyone else caught in the same avalanche?

I think he was skiing with one other person, who was above him and triggered the avalanche. That person was unhurt (above the avalanche) and skied out to be able to contact rescue.
