I drove from Lyon to Parma on Sunday. (Ok, technically, I drove from Ecully, France to Monticelli Terme, Italy.) This was a distance of about 565 km, according to Google maps. Cost of gas for the trip -- I think about 90 Euro. Cost of tolls for the trip: about 95 Euro. (In $CDN, that comes out to about $130.)

we ran into that when driving to Brussels from Paris...and we were rapidly running out of cash. On the other hand, we found a lot of awesome back roads, and got to see the Catedral de Reme (sp?)

All the toll booths I hit, luckily, took credit cards. Otherwise, I'd have had the run-out-of-cash issue, too.

Alas, credit cards at the tolls was not an option in 1991. My how things have changed!

I was in Europe around '95, but wasn't paying any tolls, since I was traveling by bicycle. It wasn't just you needed cash, you still also had to change currency at every border, too.
