It was a nice evening last night. One person had RSVPed ([livejournal.com profile] beable) for gaming, and [livejournal.com profile] con_girl and [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildr had said they would drop by to convince people to go off for chinese food. We had surprise attendance by [livejournal.com profile] foms on the drop by and drag off for chinese food, and surprise attendance by [livejournal.com profile] pezchica, [livejournal.com profile] arndis, and [livejournal.com profile] tchang, plus, of course, [livejournal.com profile] leolac and me.

Not expecting more people, the three of sat down to play Puerto Rico when [livejournal.com profile] beable arrived around 7:50pm. Then the doorbell just kept ringing. I won the first game, then the chinese food contingent drag [livejournal.com profile] beable and me off to the Chu Shing to enjoy their late night snack menu, and the remaining crowd started another game of Puerto Rico. The game was not finished by the time we got back from food, but shortly thereafter, [livejournal.com profile] pezchica pumpkinized, and I took over her position. [livejournal.com profile] leolac won the second game of Puerto Rico, much to her joy.

Thank you all, and thank you especially [livejournal.com profile] beable for the lone RSVP that let us know we should actually expect to game this evening, rather than wander off and make other plans.

P.S. For [livejournal.com profile] pezchica, online Puerto Rico.

I think Puerto Rico might be best described as an economic development game -- you're developping a colony in Puerto Rico just about from scratch, deciding what type of fields to plant, what sort of buildings to build, etc. The main mechanic of the game is a choosing of roles -- each role defines one of the main game mechanics, building, producing goods, selling goods locally for money, shipping goods to the homeland for VPs, bring in new colonists from the mainland to work in your colony, or planting new fields in your colony -- with the role being done by each player in turn, but with the "chooser" of the role getting an advantage. It is a fun game, quite interactive, with several different routes to victory. There are a goodly number of reviews on different sites with more detail, Funagain games (http://www.funagain.com/control/product/~product_id=012491) is a good one to start with.
