Pick up this morning was a bit late, so got to the airport barely 1.5 hours before the flight. We finally cleared security and customs just as the flight started boarding -- apparently Saturday morning of March break is a crowded time at the airport.

We had a 5 hour stop-over in Washington DC, which had free wifi -- of course it was so slow that it felt like dial-up. Even the google home page took a noticeably long time to load. Gah.

I'm now in the United lounge in Houston. We got in about 40 minutes early, and our flight is about 10-15 minutes delayed departing, so we've got a bit of time here. Not as much as Washington, but at least the lounge has decent wireless.

Not to mention that the switch from Continental to United seems to have slowed things up and the local weather has sucked for a few days. http://blog.chron.com/newswatch/2012/03/travelers-report-crowds-delays-at-united-terminal/

Same with the train

At first I couldn't figure out why my train to Ottawa was so packed until I noticed more teenagers than usual and realized it was March break.
This massive migration of people is why my childhood birthday parties were so sparse so I should have remembered.

Yeah, and it is bad enough that we got bumped and are forced over-night in Houston, now.

And crowded enough they couldn't get us the 9pm flight tonight, nor the 8am, or 2pm ones tomorrow. Back on the 6pm flight tomorrow.

Read someone's comment recently about how much more Javascript Google is pushing down with their homepage than they used to; at a glance it still _looks_ pretty clean, but that's mostly because they've done such a great job of making all the additional stuff blend into the background. (In fact the middle bit, where your eyes go and find the search box is even more spare than it used to be, since they've buried the image and news search links in the top bar.)

Just glancing at the scripts that load for www.google.ca, there are 6 and the first one alone is well over 300kB. If you don't have broadband speed, you're going to notice that.

Yeah, I had been noticing that the google home page was getting slower and slower. I miss when it was, really, quick simple and basic.

I guess I need a new "really simple" page to test-load against.
