I find that one of my staples when travelling is Thai food. It seems that, no matter where I am, if I can find a Thai restaurant I can find tasty food. Even in the middle of small-suburb mid-west USA, you can actually get spicy tasty food at a Thai restaurant. It does, still, vary - some are better than others. My other, usual, fall back is Indian, with Mexican a strong third.

Lunches, though, I often end up in cafeterias -- but if they have even a half-decent salad bar, that tends to be my choice. It gets me some vegetables. :)

The expensive Thai restaurant in downtown Peterborough is weird, and not good-tasting. I have also eaten some bad cheap Thai in Toronto. So, sadly, your hypothesis is not universally true. But it's one of my staples anyway.

Yeah, not universally true. But, it seems the odds are still better. For comparison, I present suburban Chinese food. *shudder*

The best Thai I had was in Ireland, middle of the small city on a side street. So yeah, your hypothesis can be verified. :)
