So, I've been getting to the end of a bottle or two of Scotch in my collection, and some of them I've quite liked. Do I buy another bottle of a Scotch I know I like, or do I try a new Scotch? The new lets me explore more tastes that might be interesting, different, or even better. But, the one I've already had and like I know I like.

Yeah, I know, half of you are probably thinking... just do both! Budget, budget, budget.

I would say, do both - two bottles collectively will give you just as much value as two bottles consecutively.

Live dangerously, get a new and intriguing Scotch.

You should go to the Somerville LCBO in Toronto, visit the tasting room and try some Scotches there, then buy the one(s) you like.

That sounds like a good idea! I didn't know they had a tasting room. When I'm in Toronto, I'll have to look into that.

Keep a record of the one you liked so you can come back to it, but try something new.

This is what I was thinking.

I have been trying to record what I like, yes. And what I don't. But, at what point do I "come back". I've already been through a fair number of different Scotches (both my own, and tasting other people's) -- is it time to come back, now?

Come back to it when you miss that particular taste, or can't remember it?

When I started drinking scotch, I put a lot of effort into diversity. Unfortunately, I started saving some to preserve the diversity of my collection, which is how I discovered that scotch loses its flavour when it has been open for about a year.

I usually buy only one bottle at a time, but I do tend to alternate between one I know I like and one that is new for the variety.

If you have a good scotch store near you and they have a good selection of the little single-serving bottles of scotch, that's a good way to try a number of scotches on the cheap that you might not want to buy a full bottle of.

I've got about 16 bottles right now. So, I maintain a collection.
