Wow, it's been a weekend...

Actually, my life has been full of wonderful stuff, lately. Very busy and very full.

Friday, [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildr had a little get-together, where the putative excuse was to drink some of the port she got for her birthday (party) the previous Friday. I think I had suggested (actually) bringing a couple other bottles myself, and turning it into a bit of a port tasting. So, I brought a couple bottles (a Kopke Ruby and a Kopke tawny), and Troy & Inge (lj-less, sigh) brought a horrible white port (announced to all as such) and a Taylor Fladgate LBV Ruby, and I brought glasses, and [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildr had cheeses and chocolate, and crackers. And a few of us had Pho first, and more showed up for the port & stuff at her place, and a wonderful evening was had by all.

Then on Saturday, my co-worker Chris was getting married. He's the person at QNX I work most closely with -- the other trainer. The ceremony was at 3pm out at Calabogie Peaks resort, and while I had a present, I didn't have wrapping paper or a card, so that came first. Then on the road and out there -- no problem finding the place, luckily. There were several other people from QNX there, so I had someone to talk with during the time waiting for the ceremony to start, and after the ceremony and through dinner. The ceremony was more Christianity than I've been exposed to in a LONG time, and probably enough to do me for another decade or so. There were hymns, and prayers, and even a little sermon along the way -- as well as the vows and stuff. This surprised me a bit, since I knew Chris wasn't very religious (at all) and didn't think Jen (now his wife) was either. Also, neither of them seemed particularly moved emotionally during the service or vows -- though I did note all the vows and stuff were perfectly symmetric. Later, after dinner, a few of the wedding party spoke, then both Chris and Jen spoke, or more accurately spoke, than read something (a poem), and both of them broke down (tears, voice cracking, emotional) during this (and I found it very touching, too). At this point, I realized that they did love each other, and this felt like the real exchanging of vows, and it became clear to me that the religious stuff was just a show put on for the families (and, I think, in particular her family). (I later confirmed with Chris that it was a show for the families, though I didn't confirm which one(s).) The rest of the QNX people left fairly soon after the speeches after dinner, but there was music and dancing so few of you readers will be surprised to know that I stayed dancing until quite a bit later -- until about 11:40. (It was still about about a 1h15 to drive back to Ottawa, so I didn't want to be too late.) I mostly danced alone, since I didn't know anyone but Chris & Jen, but Jen joined me for a few dances (she dances, Chris doesn't -- we'd also danced together a bit at the company Christmas party), and a couple of the bridesmaids introduced themselves (well one introduced herself, and I later introduced myself to Chris' sister) and I danced with them a bit. I finally left cause it was late, and cause my knee had started to give me some twinges.

Sunday morning, I squeezed in breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] succulentpoet, and had a really nice time talking with her about our lives. Then, I headed off to the grocery store to finish my shopping and get back to my place before the gamers might, in theory, show up at 1pm.

I get home, start work on the chili, and shortly after 1pm, [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildr shows up -- about on time, as expected. We finish up getting the chili on, and clearing things away for gaming, talk a little bit, play a game of Samurai, talk a bit more, kind of expecting people to show up around 3pm. Surprisingly, the next person to show up was [livejournal.com profile] leolac's room-mate, who had run a marathon, had lunch with his father, then made it to my place. We played two games of Puerto Rico, with [livejournal.com profile] ragnhildr winning the first, and me winning the second, finishing the 2nd game around 6:20pm, just as people were starting to show up for dinner. I think 12 people in total showed up for dinner, slightly fewer than I had expected, but it was still a good, friendly, crowd and we had good food. This time, we ended up with a good solid set of main course, and some very hearty carnivore fare, 3 varieties of yummy cookies for desert, but were a bit light on the vegetables. But, hey, I believe in the luck in pot luck, so I'd really see what happens than try and organise a good balance. Thank you everyone who showed up, I had a great time hosting again, and I think I was a bit more mellow about it this time than last. :)

Wow... I have been busy!

yes...we didn't have a David buzzing around the house nervously attempting to appease all his guests' whims, real or imagined. =)

Yeah, but he was pretty hilarious about the plastic forks, and refrigerating all of the food! Oh, David.

[livejournal.com profile] leolac was helping to refrigerate the food. :)

The horrible white port is still at my place. Anyone who needs to understand what truly awful port tastes like is welcome to it! ;-)

That was not a threat...it was a kind offer! *g*

It was a kind of offer, but the kind of offer it was wasn't kind.

She did not. Her post-fiancee, [livejournal.com profile] foms was here, though.
