After a weekend of debauchery (well, two very good parties, at least), I decided I'd try and get a bit of exercise, and it being a beautiful spring day, I decided rollerblading was it. Damn, twenty minutes of not overly intense (pretty consistently moving, but not pushing it at all) and I'm tired. So, I'm definitely going to have to start doing this far more regularly.

So, anyone interested in semi-irregular rollerblading? Or maybe bicycling? (Yeah, I have to get my bike out of the garage and back on the road, too.) Cause, it will be easier with encouragement/companionship.

If I only lived in Ottawa, I's join you. I have rollerblades that have gotten remarkably little use, and I'd love it if I could use them more. I just don't like rollerblading alone, though.

However, Ottawa's a little far to go for an afternoon on blades. *g*

Yeah, Ottawa is a bit of a hike for that. Only one solution, you must move to Ottawa. :)

My blades hadn't been getting enough use either, in the last few years, which is why I did want to get back out on them. It's amazing the amount of dust & gunk my blading gear had accumulated since I'd last used them.

I would be happy to skate with you if we are ever both in the same place at the same time. Skates are easy to carry on a motorcycle...

I wonder if we'll have room for skates on our trip out east...

I think I can get my skates and gear (except helmet) into one of my side luggages. One side-luggage for rain gear and road gear, back luggage for clothing; it just might work.

Oh, oops... where do I put a computer? (Do you plan to have a laptop with you?)

I'm still trying to figure things out. I need to have that computer for work, if I spend a week at the office on my return trip. I might also decide I need camping gear. If I have camping gear AND a computer AND office clothes, I probably don't have room for skates. I suppose I could ship some stuff to the hotel.

BTW, I just heard that the Scotia Prince ferry has ceased operations. So we should discuss alternate plans.

Well, maybe no blades this trip.

"2005 Season Cancelled
I am very sorry to inform you that we have been forced to cancel the 2005 season due to the lack of safe and appropriate facilities at our terminal in Portland." More... (http://www.scotiaprince.com)

Yup.

That's the Portland one, damn. There's still the ferry out of Bar Harbour, Maine -- it seems to leave at 0800 daily, and they claim it's a 2h45 trip accross on their web site. 0800 departure probably means being at the dock before the to start loading. (Though, oddly, I can't find anything on their site that says how much before departure you need to be there. Maybe they start loading at 0800?) 0800 would probably mean meeting in Bar Harbour the day before, and overnighting there.

Yeah, gets messier.

I'd be happy to meet up with you somewhere for a ride. Unfortunately, it's a bit difficult to get both of us and our bikes in the same place... (Step one, ride bicycle to Toronto. Step two, there is no step two. :)

You might try cycling to work once a week, or there one day, back the next. (I realise it's probably 25-30km to work via cyclable routes - that's why I suggest splitting up the days; initially it'd probably take you close to 2 hours, but you'd be able to get that down to 1.5 hours pretty fast, and even below that with some work.) A 1.5 hour work-out twice a week will get you back into shape pretty fast. :)

I used to have rollerblades. But last year, after 6 or 7 years of concerted non-use, I sold them. I'm just so much more comfortable cycling, not to mention faster, able to carry more... I'd say safer, but that is an issue potentially of some dispute. :)

Cycling one-way to/from work would be an interesting idea, except it leaves the problem of how to get home or back to work. The buses to/from work are something awful -- probably close to the 2 hours it would take to ride it.

And, safer may be quite disputable.

Bike racks on many busses. Bike from whatever bus stop you like.

I will be interested in cycling to get back some of my wind as soon as my shoulder will take it. I don't know about in-line skating. I have a pair but can barely keep upright.

Hmmm... the bike rack might work... have to check what buses have it. If the (99?) that finishes at Eagleson & Queensway do, I could bike to/from the Queensway out in Kanata. That just might work ok. At least to start.
