Anyone around here got a button appropriately sized to replace the one that popped off my jeans yesterday? The jeans have enough wear left in them to be worth repairing, but the button that came off is a pop-rivet type that isn't replaceable itself, so I'm looking for something to sew back on.

You can get jeans buttons at fabricland...Thay're called Bachelor's buttons and don't require fancy equipment to put on.

Bachelor's buttons? *snerk*

I had expected to apply needle & thread, wonder if that qualifies as "fancy equipment"?

The reason jeans have those rivet type buttons, is because they're under a huge amount of stress. Far more than normal buttons. I've never had much luck getting any rivet type buttons from the sewing store to stay attached under stress - they are usually made of much softer metal, that can be bent into place using hand tools. I suspect that folks at the jeans factories have heavy equipment to put the original ones on!

Anyways, I suggest you look for TWO buttons. Put one on each side, and loop the thread through both. That will relieve the strain somewhat, and make the replacement more likely to stay on.

That sounds like a good idea, actually. Though the button on the underside might be less comfortable. I know I've sewn a button back on to a pair of jeans before, and they held up ok.

I'll second the two button thing. Provided the button on the inside is somewhat smallish and flat, it usually isn't more uncomfortable than the inside bit of the rivet would be. I have part of my grandmother's button collection, so I should be able to scare up some appropriate buttons for you.

That would be cool. Thanks.
