I tried to journals only... that didn't get me back any further. I guess I just missed July 18-21st (or so) in LJ. I'll live with that, somehow.

If you're worried about a specific person, you can go to their journal and scroll back. As far as I can tell, it goes back pretty much forever. But that really doesn't work if you're trying to read your whole friends list! Takes too mcuh time.
