I just rechecked the rules on Gloria Mundi... been doing the movement of the Goth slightly wrong. Two cases:

1) If no tribute at all, moves forward one space.
2) If any tribute in front, but not paid, moves forward to the last covered space. Not to the space after the last covered (where the tribute should have been paid.) This will slow the goth down a bit, and make the damage a bit less vicious... or, more accurately, it will generally mean that if you lose a building, you get a good. (And, it will change the incentives a bit.)

Hmm, much better, my backside smarts less just thinking about it.

Oh, did the game not go so gloriously?

I think this comes out a bit less nasty, but not a lot.

It comes out a bit less nasty in (I think) three ways:

1) The Goth moves more slowly. Best case: an alternating sequences of pay/not-pay halves how fast the Goth gets to Rome.
2) The incentive to let it run is lower.
3) If you pay, you know that if you lose something, you'll get tribute back. Current setup someone always loses a card without getting a resource. (Exception: gaps where you avoid eating it because of missing resource types.)

I think it will make it noticeably less vicious.

That is indeed an improvement and makes it possible to reach Carthage.
