Home from Boston
Jan. 20th, 2009 01:17 amThe trip home wasn't quite as smooth as the trip down -- we had more weather along the way, and also spent more time on dinner and such. But we are all home safely and all.
Things learnt:
Sarducci's in Montpelier Vermont is the very good Italian restaurant that we stopped at on the way the last time I went to Arisia, and it is still very good food, and highly recommended. (Take the Montpelier exit of I89, drive along the route until you pass a couple gas stations and take the next left across the rive, then immediately right -- the restaurant is at the corner.)
Exceeding your duty free alcohol is more expensive than I thought. I'd done some research on the Canada customs site, and I had determined that the excise on hard liquor (rum, vodka, liqueurs, etc) is quite high, but that the excise on wine (including port) was quite cheap, so I decided to bring back an extra bottle of interesting port. As expected, federal excise tax was cheap: $0.47. But, the provincial liquor mark-up/fee was a lot more -- $19.46 on my $29.02 bottle of port. Now that was Quebec -- but I can't see Ontario being much different.
