Observations...
Nov. 19th, 2008 10:34 pmLabour, or at least low/un-skilled labour is cheap. There are bits of road construction going on in a few places, and in a lot of them there are people doing manually with hand-tools things that in Canada would be done with machines -- digging a trench for laying cables with a pick-axe and adze-shaped tool. Or, our group of people, about 12, has a driver that just waits around all day to drive us to the training site, to lunch, and back home again. And, this group also has another person hanging around whose job, as far as I can tell, is to fetch and carry things -- he carries people's packs or lap-top cases, and he brings coffee and cookies around at break time.
Plump still means you're wealthy, and thin still means your poor here. Plump means you're well enough off to eat well, whenever you want to, and can get plump. Thin, especially very thin, means you can't afford to feed yourself. It isn't 100%, but it is a real reversal of USA/Canada situation.
