Tried the hotel's suggested procedure -- get the operator, have the operator dial the number and connect me. Tried. Gave the number, he connects something and the phone makes a high-pitched machine scream. Hang-up, try again. He says that number is not in service/doesn't connect. I verify on canada411, yup, got the right number, try again. Nope no connection. Shit.

(Yes, Canada Direct already failed -- that was Monday night's attempt.)

I'm sorry it's been Truly Terrible so far. When you get to internet connection again, please read that you are appreciated, and there is sympathy from here!

Canada Direct worked marvelously for me from Malaysia and from Japan.

In theory, if you enter 000-167 (that is the India access number) into a telephone which is connected to an outside line, it should connect you to the Canada Direct portal as a toll-free (or local call equivalent) call. Follow the reasonably easy directions from there. I use my calling card but it's supposed to work for collect and bill-my-number calls, too.

Good luck.

I know Canada Direct is supposed to work. That's what I tried first. Apparently the hotel doesn't have toll-free access. I've used Canada Direct from: Mexico, UK, Germany, France, and the USA. My phone says "dial 0 for a direct dial", after doing that -- and dialing the Canada Direct number, I get an error: "The service is not enabled...".

I occasionally had to move from one bank of pay-phones to another in Malaysia. Different systems. I understand that pay-phones don't provide very much privacy but if you can find one that works, it gives you communication.

More luck.

Might be worth a shot if there is a payphone near the hotel, and I can get change or something to put in it. I don't remember seeing any near the hotel, but I might not have recognised them. I also can't wander too far very easily -- I'm not hugely mobile on the crutches and the traffic is a bit crazy.

I don't have a microphone for my laptop with me. In the future, perhaps I should travel with one, just in case. I'm not sure how it handles lowish-bandwidth, though. I've got about 230 Kps.
