(I'm so bored, I'm meming...)

Reply to this post and I will (eventually) respond with something for you to post your top five or ten of.

[livejournal.com profile] curgoth asked me for my top 5 favourite cities to be sent to for work.

Of the cities I have been sent to for work, these are the top:

1. Detroit, Michigan. Good friends that I don't see often enough, a couple of good rock climbing gyms, and friends who like to climb with me.
2. Toronto, Ontario. Good friends that I don't see often enough, and a couple of decent climbing gyms.
3. Boston, MA. Because I haven't [livejournal.com profile] ladysprite in far too long.
4. Austin, Texas. Because I've got friends there, and while the climbing gym is just ok, there is good real rock climbing within the city, and the local climbers are really friendly -- happy to let you get on their rope, put up a route for you, belay you, or whatever. Also, if a longer trip, I have friends in Houston to visit. (Which would have put Houston around #6.)
5. Silicon Valley, California. Lots of good food available, a couple of top-notch climbing gyms and I've built up a few climbing contacts to go out climbing with. Also, the weather is generally quite good, too. And, there's outdoor climbing around, and next time down I've got an offer to take me outdoor climbing.

Hm... what makes me like a city for travel... climbing and friends. Is anyone surprised?

And, I'm going to travel TO Kitchener soon. I guess I must have a good reason or something. :)

No matter where I go, I find things I like there if I just go often enough. I don't get bored.

I think that not having a car makes a big difference for me. In Belfast, I was nice and central and could walk places if I wanted to -- though, really, I was too tired Monday night, out Tuesday, and traveling on Wednesday. But, it is being out on the edge of town, essentially in a business park, without transportation that makes it tough.

If I come back to a place, often I do have a better chance of figuring out the more interesting bits (which is why Silicon Valley does so well on my list), but sometimes that doesn't help too much. Kokomo, Indiana just doesn't have a lot to recommend it.

Next time you're in the Vally I think there's a dinner with your name on it.

I had forgotten you're California now (for a while at least) rather than Michigan. I'll definitely let you know next time I'm going to be down that way.
