RoboRally isn't my game. It isn't that I'm bad at it, but I find very frustrating and annoying having bad randomness happen to me and completely trash me after I've spent a lot of time and effort working on something.

I also sucked at Railroad Tycoon today, but that was just making too many mistakes.

We used to play a game of pool called poker pool, where you were dealt a hand of cards (Ace through 8?) and then had to sink balls corresponding to the cards in your hand. A group of people could play at the same time. There was a huge "chance" element, you might get 2 pairs or a 3-of-a-kind in your hand, you would only need to sink that ball once. Other people might have the cards too - all the cards in your hand could potentially get sunk before it was even your turn. We found it added that element of chance that meant that inexperienced players and real pool sharks could play together, and everyone had a reasonable chance of winning - it made the game more social and less competitive, I found. As well, it was random, so every gave was different, not the same progression of balls every time. I loved it.

I know robo-rally is very frustrating, but it is a great equalizer of player skills - you still *have* to have skill or your robot will go nowhere, but the randomness meant that you couldn't always predict other players results, so you sometimes got a nice surprise when someone wanders into your target... :) I can totally see why it would be frustrating, but some games *are* chance, and that gives everyone a crack at winning. People like me don't get left in the dirt. :)

In this particular game, I was the only person severely hurt by a random event. Because of the way the custom map was set up, there was a lot more of the playing to defeat the map, and essentially no playing to interact with other robots -- they were essentially ignored. In fact, predicting your own path was so difficult that it would have been nigh impossible to predict any other robot's path. (It was a space variant, with velocities and movement cards were thrust, plus gravity wells. So doing a "move 1" would give you a speed of 1, and every phase from then on you'd move 1. Like the whole board is completely covered in variable speed conveyor belts, and each person has their own speed on the conveyor belt.)

He is giving the custom board to the winner. He's not giving up his base RoboRally stuff.
