I'm not a parent, but...

A couple with a little girl in a stroller (maybe 4 years old? I'm not good at that) sit down beside me, open their bottle of diet coke, and hand it to her to drink. *shudder*

Oh god. That is so not cool. And I say that as one of the more laid-back parents in the world.

I agree that that is so not cool, and I say that as one of biggest fans of diet coke in the world...

Well, is it the the Diet part of the coke? I'm not sure I think the chemicals are any worse than giving a small child a regular soda. Sugar is too much of a drug for a 4 year old, too, in my opinion but no one thinks anything of handing a 4 year old a huge honking slice of cake or a regular soda. Crazy people do it all the time. Not that I plan to give Kayla diet coke, either.

I would have shuddered at regular coke, too. The caffeine is going to have the kid wired for the next flight, and is not good for them. Helping them develop a taste for the stuff is going to lead to later life issues, and the diet part is not especially good idea, either. I would bet little to no actual testing has been done on the affects of artificial sugars on children's (rather than adult's) bodies.

If the baby was thirsty, why not just water?
