My home desktop is still shutting off. I tried blowing all the dust and junk out -- but it didn't help. Or if it did, only in making the sudden shut-off take a bit longer than it otherwise might. So, I see a new computer. I think I'll go shopping early next week. Not sure exactly what I want, but it won't be hard to be better -- even the bottom end is better, and mine was only 3 years old. (Though, it was bottom end at that time, too.) I wonder if anyone will sell me a machine with XP as the base install, rather than (*shudder*) Vista.

I got a new Dell about a month ago because they still offered XP.

That's useful to know.

Playing with their site, though, it doesn't look like I can configure a system with both XP and no monitor (since I've already got a monitor). Phoning them might work, though.

You can. You have to select one, and then you can customize it as you're going through.

The XP options I saw had monitors as part of the package, and none of the customization options allowed for removal of monitors. And, the monitor-less base packages under OS customization didn't allow switch to XP. Maybe the US site is different, or maybe I have to click around some more, but from what I could tell the customization choices I got on any particular package were all upgrade type, no downgrade.

Ah, have to look at the small business side, not the home. Better choices there.

I could've sworn that you could do that with the home PCs, as well... but I did get the Vostro.

Thanks, found them. Might be a good choice.

I was told that XP would no longer be offered after 2007 ended. A friend of mine bought a new computer a few weeks ago for just that reason.

I don't know if it's true, but I wanted to at least share the knowledge. I can get you a copy of XP Pro if you'd like to do your own install.

It seems to still be offered by Dell (Canada) on their website.

Check out the Trailing Edge in Bells Corners (www.tte.ca) - some good deals, especially in-store.

I'm considering paying a premium price to get a computer from one of these companies that promises it will be quiet. They seem to still have XP available on all the sites I have checked.

I haven't found noise to be too much of an issue. But you run a lot more machines in your "office" space than I do.

I heard some stores are returning to offering xp because of consumer demand, but M$ won't be making it easy as they push Vista harder and harder.

Or you go Linux or Mac. You are certainly techie enough to make Linux work for you.

Linux maybe, not Mac. If I go Linux, it will probably be a dual-boot machine, rather than just Linux. And, I'd still want XP on the Windows side.

I've been thinking I need a new PC.

Both of mine are 8+ years old. It may be time :-/
