Computer acting up

My home computer is acting up. It will boot and run for a while, then just power off. It won't respond to the power button (immediately) after this happens, but if left for a while, will power on and run for a while again. It really feels like something (maybe the power supply itself) is overheating. I'm going to check for clogged fans and stuff, and if that doesn't work, probably look at replacing the whole thing. Joy.

It actually turns off, and not freezes? And is that an immediate power off, or does it run through the shutdown sequence (don't laugh, I've actually seen the latter before).

Yeah, David is right, sounds like the power supply. Hopefully the power supply just needs a good dusting.

I agree with the power supply part of the diagnosis, but I'm not sure about dust being the disease. Can you feel airflow from it? If so, how strong and how hot is the airflow? If the airflow is weak or absent, dust is likely the culprit, but if the airflow is strong and hot, there's probably something electrical broken, and you should avoid turning it on as much as possible.

True, a new power supply shouldn't be too expensive. Though it might mean I have to futz around with hooking it up and everything.

Glad to hear the Tanga box got there. I think I picked up a box for con_girl last time I was through town, unless you've got another one? (She hasn't mentioned such to me, though.)
