Yet again, I arrive in a foreign land for an SF convention. Mostly smooth travels.

Why is it that the higher-end the hotel, the more likely they are to charge for internet access? While a less expensive hotel won't? Some things I just don't understand.

Exactly. The cost of the hotel is inversely proportional to the likelihood the person staying there is paying out of their own income, or for that matter choosing where they stay.

Yes and yet, most business hotels (where I usually stay) tend towards both expense accounts and free internet.

I think it's because the more expensive hotels are likely to have started having internet earlier, when it would have been expected that you had to pay for it. The less expensive hotels have installed internet as it's gotten cheaper and more expected--the trickle-down. See, for example, power windows/locks in cars.

That makes a certain sense, but I think ironphoenix's reason (get more cash from people with more money than sense) is more likely.

High-end lux hotels cater to folks with more money than sense.
