Well, I just might have found me a climbing gym in Stuttgart, actually it looks to be in southern Stuttgart, and Filderstadt (where I'm going) is a town (almost suburb, but has its own centre, rather than being a real satelite like North American suburbs) a little bit farther south of Stuttgart. (I fly in to Stuttgart airport.)

Of course, the web site is all in German. I was hoping for an "English" side to the site, but doesn't look that way. They probably don't intend to cater to international audiences, not unexpectedly. From cognates, though, it looks like they have bouldering areas, in case I don't have a belay partner. And, maybe something more -- this FAQ question: "Muss man zum Klettern immer mit Partner kommen? " seems to be "do I need to come with a climbing partner?" or something close to that.

Now, to see if I can find hours and rates on the site anywhere...

The question is "do I always need to come with a partner?"

13,50 per trip for adults without their yearly card

And their schedule: http://www.kletterzentrum-stuttgart.de/oeffnungszeiten.htm

Yes, they do have a bouldering area. They also have both indoor and outdoor climbing.

They also say that if you come talk to them or give them a call they can probably arrange a climbing group from among the regular climbers or you can click on their online "find a climbing partner" tool, although that requires filling out a climbing profile in German.

I'll try giving them a call. Of course, I'll have to hope someone speaks enough English that they can help me on the phone for this.

I don't think I'm up for filling out a climbing profile in German.

Much thanks for the site-reading and precis.

I've got another question.

Assuming I call up the gym, how do I say, "I don't speak German. Do you speak English?" in German?

Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. Sprechen Sie Englisch.

Your odds are fairly good in Stuttgart that the reception person will speak enough English to help you find a climbing partner. Best of luck!

Hm... yeah, might be helpful. I can see me now, up on a rope, looking up my translations on that web page when calling for slack or take.

Thanks. By clickety-clicking, I did find the schedule. But, I didn't find an obvious price anywhere.
