Tonight's meal & missing English
Mar. 24th, 2007 09:04 pmThe restaurant I thought (with hopes of Thai) was labelled "Asia - Siam", on actually visitting was "Asia - Saigon". And, after looking at the menu, I decided not to eat there. Decided to try a Greek restaurant instead. Ordered a "bohnensuppe", hoping for a tasty Greek lentil soup type thing, but got something that tasted a lot like baked-beans soup; and ordered a main dish, don't recall quite what exactly, but got what seemed like Porkchops in a rose sauce with melted cheese (almost Italian feeling) with rice. Was moderately tasty, but not what I was hoping for.
One of the things I really miss is talking to people. Here, I really can't just casually chat with anyone. If I were in the US, I could over hear conversations, chat a bit with a waitress, talk to people at a climbing gym, and chat a bit before/after class or during break with my students. Here, I can't really do that -- I can talk a bit with my students, but it is clear that they're straining to talk in English, not comfortably chatting. And all the chatter around me I can't understand. I'm looking forward to getting home. (And I really appreciate talking on the phone with gabriel_le.)
