So, I've got a free weekend in Hanover, Germany. What to do?

I've never been to Denmark, so driving to Denmark is a thought.
Or, I might visit Berlin, and see the wall. Autobahn or ubahn?
If I was in Filderstadt, I might drive to Grenoble, but that's too far from here.
So are the Alps. So, skiing doesn't look like an option.
Maybe Poland and/or the Czech republic?
Stay in Hanover and rest?

Dunno.

About a 7 hour drive... couldn't do it as a day trip, but might work for an overnighter.

Why Prague? (I know you've been there, a few years ago.)

because it's a beautiful city. I loved it there.

Prague was never bombed out in World War II so the old buildings are intact.

It also has has a strong counter culture atmosphere.

Use the autobahn, the unlimited speed limit might not last much longer.

Berlin also a counterculture element.

*g* Last I was in Germany in November, the SiL & I went to Prague. Very pretty. Best if you like shopping. The "Ghost tour" is really REALLY hokey, though -- not as much fun as it sounded.

Go to Denmark and say hi to my family.

Or at the very least go to Legoland. I've been wanting to go there since I was very very young.

Go shopping for motorcycle gear?

That was the thing on my list, that I didn't get to do last year when I was in Germany. I wanted to buy new boots, but there wasn't time. So I continued wearing my old ones, and last fall I walked right through the soles of them. Now I am waiting for new ones to be shipped from Germany.

That's an interesting thought. Of course, I'm not actually sure what I need at the moment. I just picked up new boots. Still happy with my leathers. Maybe a rainsuit -- but hard to try on without the leathers to put it over. Hm... maybe new gloves, yeah, could look at gloves.

Moria, who went to school in Germany, says:

Berlin is nice and there is a lot to see there. However, don't expect to see much "Wall" because it is pretty much gone, just a small section preserved for tourists. He says the Czech Republic is a long trip, about 8-10 hours, but Prague is a beautiful city. (His voice went all mushy describing it.) As an alternative, he suggested that Holland is a slightly shorter trip, it's not as far south as the Czech Republic.

He is very jealous that you are there. He also says he quite liked the food. *grin*

Also, my beloved BlackbirdTanya is not too far from Hanover (so says Moria) and she would probably love some company, and could show you some truly awesome places in the Forest. I can look up her contact info if you're interested.

If you stay in Germany, Berlin would be fantastic. I'd LOVE to go back; I haven't been since a year before the wall was breached. Also, Munich is nice; in addition to the good restaurants, the museums rock (if you're in a museum mood). But that's getting to be a long drive. ...aha. Peter just wandered in asking why I was looking at a map of Germany, and he says: If you rent a car, they will NOT allow you to drive it to the Czech Republic. (Ditto Poland, if you were thinking of an insanely long drive.) He says it's an insurance thing--the car theft rate in those countries is very high, so the rental companies won't risk it. Anyway... I think Berlin's looking like your best bet. It's a straight shot east. If you got adventurous, you could cut south from Berlin and see places like Leipzig, Weimar, Erfurt...Dessau, where the Bauhaus is ...OK, I'll stop now. This is getting to be a vicarious trip for me. :-) Just tell us where you went when you come back, OK?

I vote for adventure - go see something, or take in something, or whatever...not sure if glove shopping would count for me, =).

Love you...

Maybe there are some neat beers to try, though I'm not sure if you drink alcohol. There are some really bizarre German foods you could try... can't think of any right now except blood sausage but that's not very weird.

Can't ask Bob atm, he's sleeping, he used to live there and I'll ask him when he's up and comment anything interesting he comes up with.

From what I remember he enjoyed the Black Forest very much. I would probably check out castles. What about getting a closer look at the Alps? Can you tell I haven't pulled out a map...

I do drink alcohol -- but I don't like beer. I know what blood sausage is -- I don't like. I don't tend to like really bizarre food, I like interestingly or different spiced food, but not strange body parts.

The Black Forest is a thought -- will have to figure out where it is. The Alps are too far -- I'm in northern Germany, and they're south of Germany.

I don't like beer either, with a couple of exceptions. Have you had 'spetzle'? I really liked that when it was made for jacomothefool's birthday,
though I suppose it can be classified as bland.

I'm not crazy about strange body parts or blood sausage either. For some reason I think the Black Forest is near the Baden base, which may be south too.

After checking the atlas, Baden is way too far south, and the Black Forest is not labeled. Hmm...

One thing I liked when I rode through Germany, was all the castles. Mind you the trip plan was very ambitious, and Germany was just a place we passed through as quickly as possible on our way to the Alps. However it was really cool flying along the autobahn and looking at the castles. They were everywhere, I didn't need a guidebook to tell me where to look (which is good since I didn't have one). Just keep my eyes open while riding. It would have been cool to have more time to get closer to some of them, to take a good look instead of just noting them in passing while droning along the slab.
