There is to much smoking in Germany.

In Ontario, restaurants may no longer have a smoking section. In most of North America, some restaurants will have a smoking section. In Germany, restaurants seem to be all smoking section -- every table has an ashtray on it. People smoke before they get their menus, after ordering, between soup and the meal, between the meal and dessert, and after dessert while drinking their coffee. Ugh.

And, while British food has a reputation for being boring and plain -- German food isn't all that much better. And, at least in Britain you can usually find a few good Indian restaurants pretty easily.

Well, yeah. You're in Hannover. Niedersachsen isn't exactly a hotbed of multiculturalism. :-) I see you made a later post asking about places to go for the weekend. I'll make the rest of my comments (if I can stay awake....I'm working on a days-long sleep deficit here) over in that thread.

If you see any neat 'stamtisch' (huge ashtrays -often artsy in a conservative way?) you could take photos of them. If you can see them through all that smoke. I'm sort of jealous, I miss being able to smoke in a restaurant or bar.

I don't remember noticing any "stamtisch", but if I do notice any I'll try to get photographs of them.
