Vancouver update
Sep. 28th, 2006 08:22 pmI'm almost done my time in Vancouver, as I will be flying home tomorrow. Since I'm done teaching, I will actually have tomorrow morning to be a tourist! Wow. I think I'll walk over to the closest beach (English beach?) and up towards Stanley Park. It is supposed to be nice.
The weather here, this week, has been gorgeous -- consistently bright, sunny, clear blue skies, and warm. I've been walking back and forth from my hotel to where I'm working, about 2.5 km each way, generally taking about 20-25 minutes. Since the direction is diagonal across a grid, I don't think I've taken the same path twice, yet. But, it has given me more of a feel for Vancouver than I normally get when I'm in any city for business. And, of course, it does help that I'm right down town. Vancouver does have a real "down town" feel to its downtown (Toronto does too), which Ottawa just doesn't have; at least not in comparison. And some interesting buildings -- the one that caught my eye most was the Roman Coliseum. Yup, a building that is, clearly, modeled after the Coliseum in Rome -- as I walked up to it, it was absolutely clear. Neat. (I'm told the building is, actually, a library.)
It has also been nice visiting with succulentpoet. We had dinner on Sunday, and dinner again last night. Then, last night, we went to an 80s night hosted by her sweetie, Le Trev. Well, hosted and sung, and played by Le Trev, and played and back-up sung by his band. That was fun, too.
Looking forward, it seems the trip to California has gotten approval, and travel is being booked for that. Friday afternoon, October 6th, I fly to Detroit for Conclave. Onwards to California on Sunday around 5pm. Two weeks in California, then flying home on Saturday October 21st. I should be in Ottawa for 2 weeks after that. And, then, once again... who knows?
