We've arrived ok. The southern half of the 416 was mostly skating rink, black ice, white ice, slick, slippery, yuck. The northern half was just slippery. Lots of cars in the ditch.

The 401 from 416 to Kingston was really slow -- mostly volume and one good lane. After Kingston, it ran quite smoothly, mostly 100-115 km/h speeds.

All told, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours of delay compared to a normal trip.

Do you have winter tires on your car?

If so what brand?

During winter trips to Toronto, I generally don't breathe easy until I hit Kingston.

Nope. Thought about it, but nope.

I was never a fan of winter tires, thought they were a bit of hype. But now that I have them, and noticed the difference when trying to skid, I do recommend them.

I of course recommend getting used tires, because new ones are ridiculously expensive.

They are most useful when you continue to drive as though you have all-seasons, and then you stop quicker on ice. They are not useful if you say, "hey I have snow tires, I can do the impossible" and then find out the impossible is still impossible. (Not saying *you* would think such a silly thing.)
