Ad Astra weekend
Mar. 30th, 2008 07:12 pmThe drive down went very smoothly -- we left Ottawa around 1pm, and arrived around 5:15, the only slow down we hit was merging from the 401 onto the DVP, which is almost always a bad spot. So, given the time, really good traffic. Also, shyska was wonderful company on the way down. (Though she wasn't going to the con -- she had other plans.)
Friday, I went to get my badge. I'm pretty sure I registered at the con last year (I remember doing so, then regretting it, since I wasn't really sure about coming back this year), but they didn't have any record of me, so I paid again. Unfortunately, I don't think I have the receipt anywhere, so there's not much I can do about it. (At least one other person I talked to at the con had also had their reg lost, despite calling to verify a few weeks out since they'd also been lost last year.) I also unloaded into my hotel room.
Then, off to mycrazyhair's place for a wonderful dinner and evening with people. Thank you everyone who contributed, and mycrazyhair for hosting and much cooking. I had a wonderful time. Then back to the hotel, and a bit of evening time.
Saturday, I got to see a few people I haven't seen in a while, especially wonderful was getting to spend some time catching up with, and dinner with, Kyle. I don't see her often enough, and it is always good to do so. Saturday evening there were a few parties, and some Port consumed with friends as well.
Sunday was packing up, and saying a few good-byes, and a trip home. That, also, went smoothly.
I also played a few games along the way -- a couple of them in gaming space, though they closed gaming at 10pm on Saturday evening. That is way too early. (It was officially supposed to close at the same time on Friday, but ended up open a lot later.)
On the whole, I had a good weekend -- but much of it was only peripherally associated with Ad Astra. Ok, the parties were thrown at the con, but not by the convention. I did use the gaming space a little, but otherwise used essentially no convention facilities. It was a good excuse to make it down to Toronto, and a chance to see some Toronto friends. But, maybe I'd be better off doing that without Ad Astra? I'm really less and less tempted to go back. I've got a lot of inertia, and a lot of memories of it being a GOOD convention built up, though. I don't want to let that go, but I may have to.
