Climbing trip theme: Thunderstorms
Jul. 28th, 2018 07:01 pmThe theme of this climbing trip so far: Thunder-stormed off things.
Day 1: do a few climbs, we're 1 pitch up a 3-pitch trad route, sprinkle of rain, rumble of thunder... we decide to bail. It abates, and we do a few more single-pitch routes.
Day 2: hike in to Cathedral Spires, 2 pitches up east face of Spire 2, thunder rumbles and spitting rain. Look west, and the whole sky is dark grey, start to rappel off. By the time we finish the first rap, it is pouring. By the end of the second rap, there's pea-sized hail mixed into the rain, and a small waterfall down the climb. We hike out with our helmets on.
Day 3: we do a few climbs, Mike is one bolt up a trad line and thunder rumbles and it starts spitting. He bails, by the time he is down, it is raining, and by the time we're packing up it is hailing again.
Day 4: we do a few climbs, all single-pitch, Mike has lead a climb, and we've pulled the rope as it starts spitting and I head up, as I climb, thunder starts to rumble. As we get back to the car it starts to rain more. Now I'm in a coffee shop. :)
