I would say that 1846 is not a less complicated 18xx than some of the others I've played, but I do feel it is a reasonable introduction to the series because a number of the ways in which other games in the series can be particularly vicious don't exist in it. So, definitely a reasonable introduction to the family.

Train decay is more forgiving -- one more run.
Stock market manipulations are less nasty -- only president selling shares actually causes a price drop.
