In Ireland, finally.
Jun. 2nd, 2008 07:46 pmI did finally make it to Ireland, though a day late.
It turns out the Toronto-Dublin flight is a bit odd. While it is nominally economy class throughout, the first floor rows have North America style (ie short-haul) business class seats -- but the on-plane service wasn't any different. The roomier seats were nice for the long flight, though. Not as nice as real trans-atlantic first class would have been, but still nice.
And, I've had to change hotel rooms -- no wireless access in my first room. No signal. Someone from the hotel even came and verified. So that was a re-pack and re-unpack.
The Dublin-Belfast train went smoothly, though I didn't see as much countryside as I would have liked as the sides of the train route was covered in high bushes (small trees?) for much of the way. What I could see was mostly old farm country, though there was a bit of hill about half way. (Maybe around the North/South border?)
This area is definitely Unionist. (i.e. Protestant.)
I dropped by the customer site immediately, rather than my hotel. Most of them were on lunch, but the one guy there offered to drop me at my hotel so I could freshen up. There office is in an industrial park area, and as we drove out there were a bunch of stacked wooden pallets. I didn't much notice them, but he remarked on them, saying -- "Don't worrry about the pallets, there just being saved for a bonfire on (some date, I think July 12th), the troubles are pretty well over now." I hadn't even THOUGHT to worry about the pallets until he said that. Now I'm wondering what I should have/could have been worrying about.
