A good weekend.
Apr. 7th, 2008 12:03 amSaturday evening commodorified and I hosted a few people for a 21-yo tawny port we had acquired. We had a group of 7, and much appreciated the port. It was an "Old Boys" autralian "Old Tawny", though not actually labelled Port. ragnhildr brought along a Warre's Otima (10 year tawny) as well. And while we all felt that is usually quite a fine port, after the Old Boys, it just seemed ... well... lacking. Or, maybe, overshadowed. The Old Boys did need a few minutes of airing to mellow to beautifully drinkable. At this point, we felt like we weren't done, so I had another small bottle of an Australian Tawny, "Victoria", from R.L. Buler & Son which was also quite nice -- comparable to the Otima I would say. After finishing that, we still had some cheese and chocolate and smoked almonds left, but were out of port. Luckily I had a Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry (sweet sherry) around, so that got drunk, too. Not as good as the ports that proceeded it, but our palettes were, also, considerably less sensitive by that point. (Images of the bottles consumed here.)
At the end of the party, many people felt they would like a bottle of the "Old Boys" port, which the Glebe LCBO had for $44, so today I picked up a bunch of bottles of it. There are still a few left on their shelves, and it is WELL worth dropping by and picking up a bottle if you appreciate tawny ports. iclysdale has taken away 2 bottles, and ironphoenix has his. ragnhildr, we'll arrange delivery/pickup at some point. (P.S. I asked, and the person at the LCBO denied there being any sort of case/volume discount.)
Today, I was going to get up early and go snowshoeing in the Gatineaus with gabriel_le, but she had overstressed her knee snowshoeing on Saturday, so instead we slept in, and went for a wonderful breakfast at The Sconewich.
Then, it was over to ironphoenix's place for gaming, where there was a massive horde of gamers. I didn't record anything like all the games played, but I played: Banagrams (ironphoenix), Kingsburg (me, pipping Andrew by one point), Princes of Florence (me), when while waiting for the other game to finish and dinner time, a game of Banagrams, 2 games of Set, then 2 more games of Banagrams. The group split up for dinner, some of us going for Pho, others for Chinese then reconvened at my place, where we played Richochet Robots (gabriel_le) as people re-accumulated followed by a game of Hansa (me).
We also opened a bottle of a Fonseca white port to try. It is also pleasant, but I don't think I like it as much as many of the rubies, tawnies, and LBVs I've had. I would not mind having it around for variety occasionally, but I don't think it will be high on my purchase choice list. gabriel_le did seem to like it, though.
