dagibbs: (climbing)
Got out climbing today, though not with anyone. Hooked up with a guy at the gym that I've seen a couple times for some belayed climbing, though. I climbed one 5.10a with after a few tries, and was quite happy about that -- I'd looked at it before and gone, "yuck, nasty". Then next climb went up another 5.10a (which I'd climbed previously), this time without taking any falls, so actually climbed it for real. Woot!

When I started, I looked at anything in the 5.10+ range as being "OMG, people climb this?", and now I'm climbing them. Of course, now I look at the 5.11s and 5.12s (and above) as "OMG, people climb this?".

Also, it was interesting -- I saw a guy that I'd seen climbing 5.11s going up a 5.9 route that I didn't find overly difficult, and he was struggling with it. It was in a corner, and involved a lot of stemming (oppositional pushing, in a corner, rather than just vertical/overhang climbing). Apparently that's a technique type I'm comfortable with, beyond my normal climbing level. (My first 5.9 was, actually, of this type.)

And, I finally have a climbing icon. :) I should post the various candidates I created, and see what people think.
