Damn Lenovo, curse Microsoft
Oct. 31st, 2006 11:25 pmSo, today at work my new (a bit over a month) IBM (really Lenovo) laptop ran a defrag program, and after it was done, I noticed that it reported 1% space free on my hard drive. Hm... I said, that doesn't look right. So, I check properties on C:, and yup, it is also showing 53.5G used of 55G, 1% free. That's not right, how could I have filled it up THAT quickly? It's not like I've been bit-torrenting pron for a month solid or something. So, I go through all the directories and check there size... add it up... and come up with about 23G. I go through and make sure that I've told Windows to show hidden files and stuff like that. Same. I download a du utility, run it. Same. I hand the laptop over to IS, and they find the same. Eventually, after booting from a Linux-live CD and taking a look at what was on the file system under Linux, we discover there is a 28.5G file created and owned by an IBM backup and restore/recovery application, that was doing weekly backups of my hard drive to my hard drive. Duh, like that will do much good.
So, stupid IBM (Lenovo) program. Damn them.
And cursed Microsoft Windows refusing to show me that file.
Back to 30G free. And, the backup program is disabled, and I'll probably uninstall the damn thing.
