Game at Great Oak
Jul. 15th, 2006 12:15 pmHad a nice social evening of gaming -- Tammy made some delicious butterscotch, and two tables of one game each were played. The other table played Manhattan, and I played Caylus. Two of us were learning the game, and the others had played about 1-3 times -- and I ended up with a narrow victory. It took us 4 hours, including instruction, for a nomially 2 hour game with 4 people (2-5). I expect things would get faster with more experience. While it was enjoyable, it seemed almost a pure tactical game, and I don't feel any confidence that my victory was due to any clearly better decisions on my part -- though, there also is almost no luck in the game. (Almost no -- starting order is determined by luck, but there is a compensation of resources to account for the advantage of first play.) The game does have pretty bits, though. Would definitely play it again, and will probably read over some reviews when I get the chance, but not sure about buying it (yet).
