I did gym-type weights and cardio training for about six months in preparation for an organized cycle tour of Europe I wanted to do that would have involved riding something like 100 km per day. I figured the training was essential if I wanted to survive, let alone enjoy, the trip. Several gung ho gym types told me repeatedly that if I kept at it, I would be hooked and begin to enjoy the gym stuff for itself. Three sessions a week for six months convinced me that this is not true for me. The reward for that kind of excercise is never intrinsic for me....and the extrinsic one needs to be big and not terribly long term. *sigh* And then the organizers cancelled the cycle tour!
