It would be Melbourne. My boss doesn't think he can spare me for more than a month -- which makes a certain amount of sense. When this would happen hasn't been finalized, but if the customer goes for it, it would probably be late August-September time frame. It looks like the 3 months might be 1 month me, 1 month someone else, and a couple 2 week periods from other people.

It still sounds exciting.

A free trip to the ends of the earth? People used to kill for that ;)

I knew prisoners used to get shipped there -- but hadn't thought it was primarily murderers... hm.. though, really, I don't know what type of prisoners Australia did tend to get.

People unfit to be in regular society. Or people with needed skills, like masons and bridge builders, they might find themselves arrested on questionable charges and shipped off to Australia to do forced labour.

There's two people on my friends list who live in Melbourne, [livejournal.com profile] alecto23 and [livejournal.com profile] usuakari. Usuakari doesn't post much, but I'll poke at alecto23 and ask her if she has any Melbourne advice (e.g. food places, etc.)

I like Melbourne. Make sure you do some travelling around, though! Sydney is totally beautiful, and if you have time you should go to Hobart. Apparently it's fantastic, my friends Jen and Mel went there before I met them in Sydney.

Yeah, I thought it was more like this, than "hard" criminals like murderers. They were, I would guess, mostly just executed.

If it is confirmed, that would be cool. The asking, I mean.

I intend to take a week of vacation while I'm down there. That, plus weekends, should give me a chance to be a bit of a tourist. :)

Would you be going soon? I.e. in winter?

[livejournal.com profile] minnehaha B and I went to Australia 16 years ago, and hit Melbourne in September. It was cold and rainy, and I still have the socks I bought to keep my feet warm. It was nevertheless a really nice city, memorable for the little penguins and the rescued toddler wombat.

For distance comparison, I found it helpful to think of Melbourne as New Orleans; Sydney as Washington, DC; Adelaide as Memphis; Alice Springs as St. Louis; Ayers Rock as Kansas City; Brisbane as Boston; Darwin as Toronto; and Perth as Los Angeles. It's not perfect, but it keeps one from thinking that one can just hop over to a different city, and be back the next day.

You should definitely go.

I live in Canada, I'm kind of used to, "you can't just hop over to another city in a day". I've ridden my motorcycle from Ottawa-Winnipeg, that took two days (including tire replacement).

hope you get to go

How very exciting! I've always dreamed of going to Australia. I have an aunt there somewhere, I think.

You must promise to seek out odd creatures and photograph them.

hey, you!
