A summer weekend

I think this was the first weekend this year that truly felt like summer -- hot and humid. It's felt, so far, like we've mostly had an extended rainy spring.

I climbed at Lac Sam on Saturday with a small crew, then had dinner with the family back in Ottawa -- my sister, brother-in-law and nieces (2) were in town for a 2 weeks (except BIL, only a week) and headed out this morning, so met up with them for the last dinner before they left.

Today we climbed at Mont Rigaud as it was the only area without a 70-80% POP starting in the afternoon. We did get a full day of good, but hot, climbing there.

BOS -> YOW & home

Ah, Ottawa. Welcomed home by a thunderstorm and drenched between the airport and my car.

I'm off to Boston, well, Peabody/Danvers, MA for the week. And, only a 1-hop flight this time, and planned that way, and a short one at that. Looks like a small plane, too -- 13 rows.

There hasn't been enough climbing this year

The weather has been really iffy (cold and, especially wet) for a lot of the weekend days so far this year. So, despite the iffy forecast for today, I collect a few people (Ariella, Ingrid, and Martin) and headed out to Calabogie. It was cloudy and even rained a bit on us in the morning, and the hike-in was wet, and the rock was damp, though we found dry bits. But the clouds fled, and the sun came out, and we were graced by blue skies from mid-afternoon onward. And it was a good day of climbing.

Home again, without any particular delays or problems. I think I get about 3 weeks in Ottawa this time.

I'm on my way home, and not traveling on the weekend for a change. Sadly, the weekend weather does not look good enough for it to matter.

Arrived in Coquitlam

I've arrived and about 2 hours early because of my cancelled flight. Best cancelled flight ever.

It was supposed to be YOW->YYZ->YVR, but the YOW->YYZ got cancelled. I ended up re-booked for 6:30am tomorrow, but didn't like that choice... so called and am booked instead on the 5:55pm direct (instead of the 6pm departure), in a better class, with a hope of an upgrade. But, maybe stuck with a middle seat if I don't get the upgrade. Overall, I think an improvement.

Identifying climbs at Lac Sam

I've been thinking about how to label/identify the climbs at Lac Sam better. At Calabogie, they've been writing names on rocks placed at the base, but I don't like this -- the rocks get moved, the writing fades, etc.

So, I thought I'd try something different -- I just ordered 6 (stainless steel) dog tags, hopefully engraved, with the names of the climbs, and I'm just going to attach them to the first bolt of the climbs.

Ok, this only works for sport climbs -- but if I can identify most of the climbs, it will make finding other climbs nearby a lot easier.

Adulting win

I always feel like I've won at adulting when I've put away laundry, and having paired up the socks I don't end up with any mismatched socks, or un-paired socks.

Climbing weekend

Finally we had good enough weather, and enough not travel, that I got out climbing both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Ok, Sunday was too warm, but there was enough breeze to keep it tolerable. Also, the black flies appear to be greatly diminished, replaced, of course, by mosquitoes.

The sewing chores I brought along for this trip are now completed! Yay!

I know, I know. I'm failing the consumer society. Anything that is a bit worn should be thrown out and replacement. I'll try to be a good consumer next week.

Arrived in Wuppertal

The trip went mostly quite smoothly, though I did have to route around a closed highway between Dusseldorf and here -- but the GPS did that quite easily.

YOW -> YYZ -> MUC -> DUS

I'm off on a work trip to Wuppertal, Germany -- so flying in to Dusseldorf. I've currently made it to YYZ, and have a few hours here to wait.

I did manage to sneak in a few hours of climbing this morning before my 4pm departure from Ottawa, which was sweet, as it was quite a nice day.

OMG Black flies!

I don't know if they're worse than the last few years (maybe the wet spring has made this so?), or I've just (blessedly) forgotten how bad they were. But they are just awful out there! The swarms are crazy-making. My ankles (and many other bits) itch!

My trip to Germany on the 27th has been confirmed. I'll be there from the 28th through June 3rd, coming home on the 3rd. I get almost two weeks notice on this one -- such a luxury.

Progress on approaches for Lac Sam Climbing

I spent the day, with Kate and Simon, tramping and scrambling around the left wing of the cliffs at Lac Sam trying to find/organize a reasonable approach to the upper and lower sections of the cliff. I think we were successful, having marked some paths and left a couple fixed ropes up.

Short notice - Saturday gaming

Another weekend of rain, another weekend for gaming -- Saturday, my place, 1pm onward. Hope to see a few people out.

I just re-ordered and re-shelved most of my hard-cover books. They've expanded to absorb most of a third bookshelf.
